MPTA training: Improving Pupil Independence
Research indicates that quality feedback on learning and the development of metacognition skills can boost pupil attainment. Our Improving pupil independence course provides TAs with the skills to scaffold learning and help pupils become confident, independent learners.
Based on the acclaimed book, The TA's Guide to Effective Interaction, this course introduces TAs to our scaffolding framework, and provides practical strategies and reflective activities. The course is suitable for teaching assistants, learning support assistants and other classroom support staff who support learning in all settings and at all stages.
Our course content
Our MPTA programme includes two half-days designed for teaching assistants, to develop and apply new skills in the classroom. The course coverage includes:
- Latest research and guidance on the complementary roles of teachers and TAs
- Scaffolding as a framework for developing pupil independence
- Reflection on practice and developing pupil- and class-specific strategies for scaffolding
- Planning changes to practice.
An overview of the course content by session can be found here.
How our training is delivered
MPTA can be delivered onsite at the organising school, and structured to follow the school day and timetable. Most requirements can be met using one of the following delivery models.
Training costs include workbooks and lanyards for 20 Teaching Assistants per cohort, and a copy of The TA's Guide to Effective Interaction for the school.

Prices include all materials, with VAT added and reasonable travel and accommodation as arranged at time of booking.
Planning MPTA for your school:
MPTA training has been developed to provide a common standard of understanding for what defines a good learning experience, and to help redefine TAs' in-class interaction to promote metacogntive skills, and scaffold independence. It is normally delivered within our wider MITA Leadership programmme.
We recommend Leaders explore the school's readiness using our short checklist, and a designated Leader attend each session.
Schools may wish to explore our Webinar materials, organise an additional session to work with Teachers and Leaders, or link our MPTA training with a Teaching Assistant deployment review.
